Walking together for Recovery Month

September is Recovery Month, and on Tuesday 22 September our community laced up and headed out for our Recovery Walk.

We set off from the service at 10.30am and made our way to Central Park in Scunthorpe. The sun was out, the pace was relaxed and everyone was welcome, whatever their fitness.

Into the woods

Once in the park, we were led along the woodland paths under the trees. It was a peaceful route, full of dappled light and fresh air, and a real change of scene from the usual week.

There was plenty of chat along the way. People who knew each other well walked side by side with people they had only just met. There were a few laughs too, including one member who could not resist testing his strength on a fallen tree.

Why walking helps

Walking is one of the simplest things we can do for our wellbeing. It gets the body moving, clears the head and lifts the mood. It costs nothing and you can go at your own pace.

Walking together adds something more. It is easier to talk side by side than face to face, and a shared walk gives people the chance to open up, offer support and feel part of something. That sense of connection is at the heart of recovery.

Lunch back at the service

After the walk we headed back to the service, where lunch was waiting. The group room soon filled up with food, drinks and conversation as everyone sat down together to refuel and share how the morning had gone.

It was a simple day, but a special one. Good company, fresh air and a meal together are a reminder of what life in recovery can look like.

Thank you

A big thank you to our partners at WithYou for joining us and helping to make the day happen, and to everyone who came along. You made it a brilliant morning.
