Recovery Month 2026: connection, remembrance and hope in action

September is Recovery Month: a time to make recovery visible, challenge stigma and celebrate the courage, connection and support that help people move forward.

At Scunthorpe Recovery Service, lived experience is at the heart of what we do. We know that recovery does not happen in isolation. It grows through honest conversations, practical support, shared purpose and opportunities to feel part of a community.

Throughout September, we will be creating opportunities to remember, take part, connect with others and show that recovery is possible.

Across the UK, recovery communities will also be sharing stories, holding walks and creating events that bring people together.

Remembering lives lost - Tuesday 1 September

International Overdose Awareness Day takes place around the world on 31 August. It is a day to remember those who have died, recognise the grief carried by families and communities, raise awareness and strengthen action to prevent overdose.

On Tuesday 1 September, Scunthorpe Recovery Service will join colleagues from WithYou in Scunthorpe for a memorial event at a local allotment. The event will offer a respectful space to remember people we have lost and stand alongside those whose lives have been affected.

Speak to our team if you would like more information about the event and who can attend.

Taking on the Recovery Games - Sunday 13 September

Our team will be heading to Sandall Park in Doncaster to take part in the annual Recovery Games.

The Games bring recovery communities together for a full day of friendly, Gladiator-style challenges, teamwork and celebration. Teams go head-to-head, but the biggest result is the confidence, connection and shared pride created by taking part.

The event also includes live music and community activities. It is a powerful opportunity to make recovery visible, meet people from other services and support the organisers who make this national celebration possible.

We are proud to be representing Scunthorpe and cheering on every team taking part.

Our Recovery Walk - Tuesday 22 September

On Tuesday 22 September, we will set off from Scunthorpe Recovery Service at 10.30am for a community Recovery Walk.

The walk will be at a slow pace and people of all exercise and fitness abilities are welcome. It is not about being the fastest or walking the furthest. It is about taking steps together, building connections and supporting one another.

After the walk, there will be nibbles and food provided by local food providers.

To sign up or ask about accessibility, speak to a member of our team at 70a Frodingham Road or call us on 01724 410423.

A closer look at the Twelve Steps

Recovery Month is also a good time to highlight 12 Steps Explained, a recent addition to our weekly programme.

The group is a nine-session journey through the Big Book. It starts with The Doctor's Opinion and Bill's Story, then explores the core recovery programme and Steps Three to Twelve. It gives members space to listen, reflect, connect and consider how the ideas can be put into action. Alcoholics Anonymous Great Britain describes the Twelve Steps as a structured and gradual recovery process.

12 Steps Explained takes place on Mondays from 1.45pm to 3.15pm. If you are interested, ask our team whether the group could be a useful part of your own support.

Every step counts

Recovery Month is not only about events. It is about making hope visible and reminding people that support, community and new possibilities are available.

Whether you are taking a first step, strengthening your recovery or supporting someone you care about, you are welcome to start a conversation with us.
